Map of Hell Preview
Article II - 5.15.2025 | The Ninth Circle Newsletter
Well this is a fun update! It was my goal to complete the Map of Hell for today’s patreon post, and I’m so excited about it that I want to share a preview of it here as well! I won’t be covering my other updates this time, just talking about the map.
Available on patreon is a version of the map with more labels—hand-written labels from the map’s original drawing. I still enjoy the layout of that text, but haven’t decided yet about if I want to redo it.
But over here, I would like to show off the artwork. This thing has plagued me since the first time I drew it in 2019, and I am so happy to have a version that I am proud to share.
An important note for those new to my works: while the circles are inspired by/mostly accurate to Dante’s Hell from the Divine Comedy, there are also significant changes (e.g. the location of Milton’s Pandemonium on top of Cocytus).
The placements of the text that is here is not final, and neither is the kerning. But there’s so much missing and so much that needs to be pointed out. However, I am still relieved that with the exception of a few tweaks, the artwork for it is DONE. It is a massive weight off of my shoulders.
I feel like providing context that the detail of the Eighth Circle is bare because I plan to label each bolgia (ditch), and that will take up much of the spaces in those ten segments (I also need to determine where to place the Eighth Circle text itself). Many of the details described in Holiest I also did not draw (e.g. the colossal statues in Dis), both because the map will be so small in the book even as a full page, and because there is just so MUCH to draw. Also, Pandemonium and Dis are not to scale. Because I wanted people to be able to SEE them.
Anyways, please enjoy this preview of the map, and some additional details:
And, as last time, here is your Dantino cat update:
